One of Knollwood’s signature initiatives, Faith in the City invites participants to deepen community conversations about complex issues and find ways to work together to address injustices. Join us as in May as we discuss the topic “Exceptional Children: Facing an Uncertain Future.”
The ability to adequately serve N.C. students with special needs faces an unsettled future from the concerning combination of private school vouchers, federal attacks on DEI, and the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education.
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, how can we better understand what is potentially at stake when schools may lack the resources — or the mandate — to serve these students? What is being done to ensure that students with disabilities and other special needs continue to thrive? Our discussion will be led by two statewide advocates working on these issues: Carlton Powell, interim director of The Right to Education Project, Legal Aid of N.C., and Elijah Moffe, staff attorney of Disability Rights N.C.
Faith in the City meets in-person October-May, with a Zoom option available. The May Zoom link is tinyurl.com/FITCMay25.
