Wade in the Water: An Invitation to Anti-Racism

Trainers Amaris Carr and Kim Strong will invite a conversation about our role in dismantling systemic racism.

On Wednesday evenings, we gather from 5:30–6:15 p.m. to share a meal and the joys and concerns of our community. Then, from 6:15–7:00 p.m., through careful and varied programs, we delve into topics relevant to our faith, our times, our call to missions and service.

“Wade in the Water” is a familiar Negro spiritual that evokes both the liberation of the Exodus, and the healing waters of Bethesda in John 5:4. Historically, the coded lyrics helped guide slaves to freedom, and today, this song is still frequently sung as part of the ritual celebration of baptism in many churches.  The title points to a nexus of racist history and gospel proclamation that challenges Christians in the U.S. to wade in and take up the work and mission of dismantling racism.

This 2-part Wednesday night workshop, facilitated by Green Street United Methodist trainers Amaris Carr and Kim Strong, will be a thoughtful mix of historical content, systemic analysis, engaging videos, and table conversation. The sessions will balance the presentation of facts and concepts with opportunities for personal connection and discussion, and will emphasize confidentiality and safe space for honest expression. All are invited to begin where they are, and wade in a little deeper.
