THEOLOGICAL FORECAST: PARTLY CLOUDY
Psalm 93; Acts 1:6-11; Luke 24:44-49
At the Ascension of Jesus, as often at pivotal experiences of the Divine in the Bible, the glory of the moment is shielded by a cloud (v. 9, “and a cloud took him out of their sight”). Such clouds shield the human creature from the overwhelming glory of God and leave room for human freedom and agency in fulfilling God’s mission. Those clouds are also a reminder that our theological perceptions are always limited, “for we see in a mirror dimly” and “know only in part” (1 Cor. 13:12).
