In his encounter with God on the holy mountain, Elijah does not hear God’s voice in any of the expected places: the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Instead, God’s voice is heard in the “sound of sheer silence” (1 Kings 19:12, NRSV). How can we, like Elijah, know the “voice” speaking is the voice of God?
